Working with Fox and Fremantle on“American Idol” we have delivered numerous interactive industry innovations since the series launched in 2002. Voting has always been a cornerstone of the series’ interactivity with fans so we wanted to continue to evolve that relationship and feature fans’ passion for contestants in dynamic ways.
IDOL FAN SAVE: As we continue to evolve the way fans vote and interact with the show, we launched a brand new campaign, the Idol Fan Save in Season 14. The Fan Save put the power in the hands of the viewers who sealed the fate of the bottom two contestants with their tweets. By voting on Twitter, America had just 5 minutes to save one contestant. All tweets were verified and captured in real-time through our Connect Live platform. Using technology in this way gave fans even more power in crowning the next American Idol and drove engagement around the show.
FACEBOOK VISUALIZATION FAN WALL: In a social TV first, in partnership with Facebook, we utilized voters’ Facebook information to show real-time voting results and to give voters their moment of TV fame as their Facebook Profile Pictures were broadcast live on-air in show. Using technology in this way enabled us to reward fans and drive engagement around the show.
To enable live broadcast visualizations, voting changed to open at the top of the show and Telescope’s technology platform provided a verifiable, high capacity solution. Telescope also developed software for real-time moderation of voters’ Facebook Profile Pictures, a solution suited to the live TV environment.
As contestants performed, the studio backdrop filled with fan images, creating unique real-time fan walls, plus Facebook tapped data such as age, gender and location highlighting voting trends. The integration extended beyond TV activation. Facebook users broadcast on-air received sponsored News Feed posts featuring their personal Idol videos, driving huge social sharing amongst a wider network.
American Idol Season 13 broke records with over 71 million votes cast in the first performance show! As the voting continued, Facebook became the most popular method for voting using the SuperVote mechanic, fueled in part by the opportunity of seeing their picture on-air supporting their favorite Idol. During season 14, we hit the milestone of our 6 billionth vote for American Idol across the series, thanks in part to the Idol Fan Save activation.
IDOL PARTNERSHIPS: Telescope has powered the critical outcome voting for the American Idol for all 14 seasons across all methods including toll-free, SMS, SuperVote (online and American Idol App). We also powered Google Search Voting in 2014 this was a world first and enabled fans to vote in real-time through Google’s Search Engine. All interactivity has been powered by our Connect Live platform which has powered the highest volume of participation traffic with award winning results, as American Idol still holds the record for the highest volume of interactions for any TV show globally.
