The COVID Arms Virtual Pub Trivia

During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, CrowdfunderUK turned to Telescope to power an interactive, remote pub trivia experience (and set a Guinness World Record along the way).

OVERVIEW

CrowdfunderUK, a UK based fundraising platform, turned to Telescope to power a live pub trivia event to help raise fund for the NET (National Emergencies Fund) as well as attempt to set a Guinness World for largest virtual pub. CrowdfunderUK pulled together an all-star cast of comedians and talent including host 'landlady' Kiri Pritchard-McLean, Russell Howard, Nish Kumar, Jason Manford, Joel Dommett, Marcus Brigstocke, Rachel Parris, Lucy Beaumont, Jenny Ryan, Joe Wilkinson, Rachel Fairburn, Mark Watson, Stephen Bailey, Suzi Ruffell, and Miss London Hughes. Each comedian read their set of self-created questions while users could play along in real time with the integrated trivia application (Telescope’s Triple Play product) directly below the livestream.

HOW IT WORKED

Telescope created and hosted a unique virtual experience that included a 'ticketed' front page in order to gate the entire site so as to ensure those participating donated to the cause and could be fully accounted for while (successfully) attempting to set the Guinness World Record. Those who purchased tickets to the event were permitted access to the live stream video player embed as well as play-along pub trivia widget directly below. Viewers were even given the option to purchase a VIP experience and be included into the 'front-row', which included being interviewed on camera during the event.

KEY FEATURES

  • Unique ticketing system via code and URL hashing allowed for only users who purchased tickets to access the event

  • Combined digital play-along experience and live-streaming capabilities to create a seamless user experience

  • Trivia results allowed for players to see how others participating at-home answered questions with visible percentages at the end of each question, allowing the hosts to react directly to the crowd on how well or poorly they were performing...excellent fodder for a group of comedians

  • Raised money for a great cause while having fun during these unprecedented times

RESULTS

  • Raised over £33,000 for the National Emergencies Trust

  • 6,248 users joined to break the Guinness World Record for the most visitors to a virtual pub!
