For the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, Telescope developed a new ranking submission product that seamlessly integrated with NBA.com
Telescope created a brand-new fully custom ranking product for NBA that allowed users to rank each of the NBA Players' dunks as the fifth Slam Dunk Judge. This interactive experience allowed users to login through NBA to rank players’ dunks in real time as the Slam Dunk contest progressed, using a dynamic slider-based system with scores ranging from 40-50. The ranking experience mirrored the visual design of NBA’s All-Star Weekend Vote, with player grids, live progression through the dunks, and the ability to share their participation. Telescope also delivered real-time results with custom calculation logic to average all the fans’ scores, a fully customized winner screen showcasing the champion post-contest, and social sharing capabilities for users. With a focus on speed and accuracy, Telescope provided live support throughout the weekend and night-of results with comprehensive reporting alongside an intuitive custom dashboard.
Users were prompted to scan the QR code on-air and in-arena to navigate to the voting site, which landed them on a player grid listing the competing NBA players.
Users could click on the player to expand the player card, where they could use the slider (between 40 - 50) to assign a rating based on how well they believe the player dunked for each player on the court.
Once a dunk rank was submitted, users will receive a Thank You message within the player modal that allows them to share their participation on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook.
Between rounds, Telescope pushed an Interstitial Page, which notified users of who was coming up next. The grid also called out if a player had completed their dunks within that round, was coming up next, or was on the clock.
Once the contest was finalized and the winner is announced, Telescope configured and pushed a fully customized “Winner” screen that included the winner’s headshot, name, team logo, and the ability to add a hyperlink out.
For the first time ever, NBA ID members played a direct role in crowning the next AT&T Slam Dunk champion at NBA All-Star.
Created a unique virtual engagement tool for fans to feel part of the contest through ranking each dunk.
Integrated seamlessly with the NBA login, allowing existing NBA users to easily login and new users to quickly create an account.
Users remained logged in throughout the experience, allowing a user remain active on the Closed, Interstitial, and Winner, Closed pages.
A “Coming Up Next” indicator was included to keep users engaged and on the site between players.
Included a collection of all scores and returned calculated average to NBA in real-time.
Created a unique virtual engagement tool for fans to feel part of the contest through ranking each dunk.
The activation demonstrated Telescope’s ability to create an engaging, data-driven, and fully integrated digital experience for NBA fans as evidenced by user engagement metrics showing the majority of users voted in ALL rounds/dunks for ALL players on court.
The NBA ranking application’s user engagement exceeded expectations, outperforming fan engagement for other events over the weekend, including even well-established voting events.
